ICT Adoption and Its Effects on the Economic Growth of Bangladesh: A Time Series Analysis

Understanding information and communication technology (ICT) adoption’s particular effects on a nation like Bangladesh is critical because ICT adoption continues to play a significant role in promoting economic progress globally. By analysing the relationships between ICT use and economic growth in Bangladesh, this study examines data from 2002 through 2021 using a time series analysis. ICT export, gross capital formation, mobile cellular subscriptions, government budget allocation, and foreign direct investment are just a few of the independent variables the study takes into account in relation to ICT adoption. These factors were selected based on their applicability to the adoption of ICT and their potential impact on economic expansion. According to the results of the time series research, the ICT sector’s growing exports have a favourable and considerable impact on long-term economic growth. Mobile cellular subscriptions negatively affect economic growth, with significant short-term impact and insignificant long-term effect. The influence of the government budget is detrimental but insignificant for both long-term and short-term economic growth. The study comes to the conclusion that Bangladesh’s economic development is significantly benefited by the adoption of ICT. The study also highlights the significance of government assistance through budgetary allocation and strategies that draw in foreign direct investment. The results can direct the development of policies and evidence-based decision-making to use ICT adoption as an accelerator for sustained economic development in Bangladesh.

Exploring the Complementary and Nonlinear Effects of Financial Development and ICT on Inclusive Growth in South Asia

The current research aims to examine the dynamics among financial development, renewable energy consumption, information and communication technology (ICT) and inclusive growth by focusing on the interaction of finance and ICT in South Asia from 1995 to 2019. The objectives of the study are obtained by using new and broad measures for inclusive growth and financial development. The panel co-integration tests confirm the long-run association between the selected variables. The existence of cross-sectional dependence and mixed order of integration of analyzed variables require the application of panel linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL). The findings of both techniques disclose that financial development and ICT individually are significant and vital contributors to inclusive growth in the long run. While their collaboration does not supplement inclusive growth during the same period which is an interesting and unique finding. The short-run outcomes also endorse this outcome. However, the individual impact of financial development remains insignificant while ICT enhances inclusive growth significantly in the short run. The panel nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) results have more explanatory powers than panel ARDL and endorse the assumptions of significant complementarity and nonlinearity between financial development-ICT and inclusive growth. Therefore, it is suggested to increase the access and efficiency of financial intermediaries to accelerate the participation of the masses in the economic growth process and its benefits. In addition, more investment in ICT infrastructure and education is needed so that the ICT sector can complement the financial sector efficiently to boost inclusive growth in South Asia.

The influence of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the development of the country's economy as a whole and individual regions is considered, the importance of the ICT sector in the economic, social, and social processes of the country and its regions is noted. The necessity of identifying the relationship between the uneven development of the ICT sector and the socio-economic development of the regions is substantiated. A study of domestic and foreign works devoted to the relationship between the level of ICT development and socio-economic systems has been conducted. The author's interpretation of the concept of the “digital divide” is presented, the reason for its formation and strengthening, the concretization of the opportunities and threats it creates for the subsequent spatial development of Russia is revealed. By systematizing the characteristics of narrow and broad approaches to the definition of the digital divide, their advantages and disadvantages were highlighted, and the expediency of developing a new methodology for assessing digital inequality was proved. The essence of the narrow approach is manifested in the uneven access to ICT services, which is based on the uneven development of ICT infrastructure. The broad approach is based on the study of the level, causes and consequences of digital gaps between countries, regions, and territories. It is noted that the boundaries between the presented approaches are leveled as a reaction to the challenges of modernity, forming a new integral approach accumulating theoretical and methodological developments of previous periods. Improving management efficiency at the present stage is largely due to leveling the influence of factors exacerbating the digital divide, identifying and comprehensively studying emerging opportunities/threats for the development of specific territories.

Gender disparity and enterprise expansion in the impact and transmission channels of ICT on unemployment in developing countries

This study examines the impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on employment in 95 developing countries from years 2000–2021. The study focuses on short-term and long-term effects, gender differences, and the role of enterprise expansion. The results suggest a complex dynamic: on short term ICT's appear to stimulate employment for both genders but on long term, they can lead to a loss of jobs, particularly in sectors mostly dominated by women. The Human capital plays a crucial role as a mediator of the effects of ICT's on employment. However, it can also result in gender inequalities in accessing ICT-related job opportunities. In addition, while enterprise expansion may mediate the effects of ICT on employment, it can also have negative long-term consequences as automation continues to advance. To promote gender equality in the ICT sector, it is suggested to collect gender-disaggregated data to better understand the labour market, to develop training and employment policies, and promote female entrepreneurship.

Topic mining for theses and job ads in ICT sector: can higher education institutes respond to job market demands?

IntroductionThis study aims to tackle the challenge of ensuring higher education students are equipped with high-demand skills for today’s job market. The focus is on aligning the knowledge acquired during their studies, as represented by final-year thesis projects, with the skills and topics specified in actual job advertisements.MethodsWe developed a computational framework that uses automated subject indexing to extract representative skills and topics from two major datasets: thesis abstracts from Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences, and ICT-related job ads from a top Finnish job portal. Our dataset spans 12 years, comprising 18,254 theses and 107,335 ads. The framework includes a subject indexing model for keyword extraction, dimension reduction techniques for data simplification, clustering algorithms to group similar items, and correlation analysis to compare similarities and differences between the two datasets.ResultsThe analysis uncovered both similarities and differences between thesis topics and trends in job ads. It highlighted areas where education aligns with industry demands but also pointed out existing gaps.DiscussionOur framework not only helps to align the education provided with industry demands but also ensures that higher education institutes can stay up-to-date with the latest skills and knowledge in the field, thereby better equipping students for success in their careers. While the framework was applied to the ICT sector in this instance, its design allows expansion into other fields offering a data-informed approach for continuous development of teaching curricula and methodologies.

This study explores the role of mentoring in advancing women’s careers in Malaysia's ICT sector, where women are underrepresented in leadership roles. This conceptual study is primarily centered on examining the role of mentorship in advancing women's careers in Malaysia's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. It examines societal, organizational, work-life balance, and individual factors influencing the career paths of women in the ICT sector in Malaysia. This study is significant in providing the importance of promoting diversity in the workforce, in line with the Sustainable Development Goal  SDG 5 i.e. Gender Equality.

Collaboration Skills in Vocational Schools in The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector

In 2018, the technology, business and ICT (information and communication technology) sectors were the sectors that received the most new students at the vocational school level. Jobs in the ICT sector are one of the sectors that are really needed in Indonesia. There are more job vacancies in the ICT sector for vocational schools than for high schools. However, in the 2015-2019 period, the number of ICT sector workers with high school graduates was higher than vocational school graduates. The soft skill that is most needed in ICT sector jobs is collaboration. The main objective of this literacy study is to describe learning methods to improve collaboration skills in vocational high school students in the ICT field. Systematic literacy study using the PICOC framework is the method used. The results of this literacy study are in the form of descriptions related to: 1. The concept of collaboration; 2. Challenges and obstacles; 3. Learning activities to improve collaboration skills. It was found that problem-based learning (PBL) can improve collaboration abilities. To be suited to the world of work, it is necessary to integrate the Scrum model to develop vocational school students' collaboration skills in the field of ICT.

ICT sector electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions – 2020 outcome

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector has gained much attention in the discussions on climate change, as it could impact global emissions both positively and negatively. The objective of the present study is to provide estimates for the 2020 use stage electricity consumption and ICT sector's total lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions divided in three main parts: user devices including internet-of-things, networks and data centers. The study builds on a high number of data sources including measured and reported data from 150 companies that is estimated to cover about 80% of network subscriptions, about 55% of data center electricity, and about 35% of upstream GHG emissions. To understand the development, the results are put into the perspective of earlier studies. In conclusion, the ICT sector used about 4% of the global electricity in the use stage and represented about 1.4% of the global GHG emissions in 2020. The use stage electricity consumption and the total GHG emissions have increased since 2015, but the impact per subscription has decreased. The user devices accounted for over half of all GHG emissions, with equal parts relating to use stage and other lifecycle stages. For networks and data centers, the use stage GHG emissions are dominating. The electricity consumption and GHG emissions are also estimated for the closely related areas Entertainment and Media (including e.g., TVs), paper media, and cryptocurrencies.

The impact of strategic thinking on organizational excellence: An empirical examination in Jordan’s ICT sector

This study empirically examines the impact of strategic thinking on organizational excellence in Jordan's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Adopting a quantitative methodology, this study surveys a sample of 270 individuals drawn from various ICT companies across Jordan. Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) for analysis, the study investigates the effects of different dimensions of strategic thinking on organizational excellence. The findings reveal that among the dimensions studied, dynamic and systematic thinking significantly and positively influenced organizational excellence. These results underscore the critical role that adaptive and methodical approaches to strategic thought play in enhancing organizational performance and competitiveness within the fast-paced ICT sector. The study not only contributes to the theoretical understanding of strategic thinking's relevance in organizational success but also offers practical insights for ICT companies aiming to achieve excellence in a dynamic business environment.

The Role of Transport, ICT and Power Infrastructure in the Ethiopian Economy

Infrastructure development plays an important role in reducing poverty, assuring food security and sustainable development of a country. One of the key challenges hindering the economic growth of developing countries is the lack of proper transport, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and energy sector infrastructures. This research aims to examine the importance of transport, ICT and power sector in Ethiopia’s economic growth and identify the main challenges these sectors have been facing based on data obtained from different secondary sources such as websites of the World Bank and Trading Economics, official reports, and published works. Descriptive statistical analysis was implemented to describe the secondary data obtained, while graphs, tables, and charts were used to visualise the results. Despite the difficulties in establishing and sustaining necessary infrastructure, research indicates that the growth of Ethiopia’s economy is largely attributed to infrastructure development. Furthermore, year after year, progress has been made in each sector of development, though there are still obstacles to overcome. Poor quality of road, transport and ICT infrastructure have been key factors of poor development in the country. There is an imbalance between the power needed and the available power. Given Ethiopia’s abundance of resources, the country must continue to prioritise infrastructure development.

Assessing the negative impact of the it sector on the environment: a call for sustainable solutions

The article explores the negative impact of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector on the environment and offers recommendations to reduce this impact. The article highlights that while digital and environmental issues are major topics of public debate worldwide, they are rarely discussed together. The article uses a qualitative approach to assess the current impact of the ICT sector on the environment by reviewing relevant literature, analyzing data on the global impact of the sector, and considering measures to prevent the negative effects. The study reveals that while ICT can have positive effects on the environment, it also carries sources of threats, such as excessive consumption of resources for the production of devices, CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, changes in flora and fauna, and growing electronic waste. The article concludes by calling for manufacturers to use environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes to create products with high recycled content to reduce the environmental impact of the ICT sector.

The Nexus of Institutional Pillars and Service Innovation in Pakistan's ICT SME Sector: An Empirical SEM Analysis

Service innovation is a critical driver of economic growth and competitiveness in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, especially in developing countries like Pakistan. However, the full potential of the ICT sector innovation capacity remains unrealized due to the absence of adequate measures for evaluating and managing the factors that influence innovation, particularly institutional factors. SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) in Pakistan is empirically examined to determine the impact of institutional pillars on their ability to innovate service offerings. The study SEM to analyze data collected from 320 project managers of ICT SMEs in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad. The findings reveal that normative, and cognitive institutions have a significant positive impact on service innovation while the regulative pillar has an insignificant impact on ICT SMEs in Pakistan. The comprehensive institutional framework is also found to be positively correlated with service innovation. The findings from this study have important implications for Pakistani policymakers and SMEs in the ICT sector. Policymakers should focus on creating a supportive institutional environment that facilitates service innovation. ICT SMEs should also be aware of the institutional factors that influence innovation and develop strategies to mitigate the negative impact of institutional constraints.

Analysis of the Effect of Technology on the Growth of the Information and Communication Sector in the Bali Province 2016-2021

Technology continues to develop and drive economic growth. Bali, as a province that is open to foreign tourists in Indonesia, has a great opportunity to adopt technology more quickly. This study aims to analyze the effect of technology development as well as other variables such as the number of workers in the ICT sector, household consumption for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and the amount of accommodation for Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the ICT Sector in districts/cities of Bali Province. The analysis to be used is descriptive and inferential analysis with panel data regression from regencies/cities in Bali Province period 2016-2021. The model used is the fixed effect model. In general, the GRDP of the ICT Sector continues to increase, but its growth is decreasing every year. Meanwhile, technological developments in Bali Province tend to increase every year. With a significance level of 5 percent, the percentage of e-commerce users, the percentage of ownership of cell phones, and the number of accommodations have a significant positive effect on the GRDP of the ICT sector. Technological progress has not been fully utilized, therefore the GRDP growth of the ICT sector tends to decrease every year.

A comprehensive array of metrics has been systematically devised to assess the evolution of the digital economy. This framework encompasses indicators derived from information and communication technology (ICT) statistics, national economic accounts, fixed asset investments, and foreign trade, as well as indicators custom-developed in consonance with the proposed taxonomy of economic pursuits within the digital economy. This classification system comprises five distinct blocks, each comprising discrete sets of indicators: those about the ICT sector, the digital sector, organizational outlays on digital technologies, digital proficiency of the workforce, and a holistic gauge of the digital economy. An intricate methodology has been formulated to quantitatively evaluate the ICT sector’s state, progression, and competitive standing. This methodological construct encompasses algorithms for the computation of physical quantities of gross value added and fixed capital investment segregated by the nature of economic undertakings associated with the production of ICT goods and provisioning ICT services. Assessing and Forecasting Current and Future Trends of ICT Employment in European Enterprises

In the current context, the labor market volatility in the information and communications technology sector (ICT), the challenges faced by companies in identifying and hiring these specialists, as well as the challenges faced by specialists in this field in terms of employment and job retention, necessitate a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the ICT labor market developments in close correlation with the current trends of digitalization of the economy. On this premise, the research presented in this article seeks to examine data about European firms that have engaged or tried to hire ICT specialists in the period 2014-2020, as well as the trends for the period 2021-2030. The purpose of the research will be to provide, on the one hand, the development of the selected variables for research during the analysis period and, on the other hand, the trends related to the ICT labor market for the categories of enterprises under study. The study aim will serve as the basis for the development of research questions and hypotheses, which will be tested using two types of methodological techniques, namely linear analysis and linear regression-based predictions.

Africa’s roads to digital development: paving the way for Chinese structural power in the ICT sector?

Over the past few decades, China emerged as Africa’s main partner in digital development. Sino-African cooperation in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector meets African demand for advanced technologies and know-how while helping China to position itself in the global ICT sector. Albeit crucial for Africa’s digital development in the short term, this paper argues that the breadth of Sino-African cooperation carries important long-term consequences that could afford China latent control over Africa’s digital development. Drawing on Susan Strange’s pillars of structural power, this paper considers how the rollout of fiber-optic network cables underpins Chinese control over production, how the construction of data centers might impinge on security, and how research partnerships enhance norms and standards in future innovation—the knowledge pillar. The paper argues that the enabling force of Sino-African cooperation in these three realms is Chinese finance. To test this claim, I conduct a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) of 42 states in Sub-Saharan Africa, showing that Chinese aid and, to a lesser extent, Chinese loans are the main drivers of Sino-African ties in the ICT sector. The paper concludes that Chinese financial support not only promotes Africa’s digital development but also paves the way to Chinese structural power in the ICT sector.

Fostering firm innovativeness: Understanding the sequential relationships between human resource practices, psychological empowerment, innovative work behavior, and firm innovative capability

This study investigated the relationships between human resource (HR) practices, employee psychological empowerment, employee innovative work behavior, and firm innovation capability in the context of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Jordan. Employing the Social Exchange Theory (SET) as a guiding framework, this study explored how employee psychological empowerment and innovative work behavior mediated the influence of HR practices on a firm's innovative capabilities. Drawing on extensive data collected from ICT organizations in Jordan, our analysis had several key findings. A significant positive correlation between HR practices and psychological empowerment was observed. Job design emerged as the most influential factor affecting psychological empowerment, whereas compensation had a weaker impact. Furthermore, we established that psychological empowerment significantly enhanced innovative work behavior, underscoring its role as a catalyst for innovative work behavior within the sector. Finally, our study supported the theory that psychological empowerment influenced a firms' innovation capabilities, emphasizing the pivotal role of employee empowerment in driving firm-level innovation in the Jordanian ICT sector. These findings provide insights for academic and practical audiences, clarifying how HR practices, employee psychological empowerment, and innovative work behavior collectively influenced firm innovation capability within the unique context of the Jordanian ICT sector.

Current and future roles of the automotive and ICT sectoral systems in autonomous driving - Using the innovation system approach to assess value chain transformation

In this paper, we assess the current and future roles of the automotive and the information and communication technology (ICT) sectoral systems in the provision of autonomous driving and draw conclusions on the potential configuration of the corresponding value chains. We approach the question of value chain transformation from an innovation system perspective, combining sectoral, national and technological perspectives on innovation systems. We introduce a supplementary function at the intersection of the sectoral and technological innovation systems that describes the interactions between the automotive and the ICT system. By choosing indicators that allow for the sectoral and national differentiation of activities, we are able to identify differences and similarities in engagement between the automotive and ICT sectors and countries. Furthermore, we find various and changing types of interactions and relationships, such as competition, cooperation or spill-over, between the sectoral systems. Our findings underline the relevance of contextual factors to the dynamics and design of innovation systems, based on which we propose an approach for integrating different perspectives into one study. We find the strength of the innovation system perspective in its structuring and holistic characteristics and demonstrate its applicability to the assessment of value chain transformation.

Digital Entrepreneurship and growth-oriented performance: commercialisation narrative of SMEs in the ICT sector in China

ABSTRACT This article addresses the dynamics of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) during the commercialization process in high-tech sectors, particularly in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field. Except for early-stage entrepreneurial activities in technology firms, SMEs in the commercialization stage have received limited attention. Employing the Construal-Level Theory (CLT) and a concrete-abstract dimensional narrative approach, the study explores the relationship between narrative construal levels and SMEs’ success in Chinese cities. Encompassing ICT firms with 6 to 1000 employees, the study utilizes a Multilevel Mixed Method approach. Findings reveal that concrete narratives play a moderating role in the relationship between specific business technology and firm performance, emphasizing the importance of aligning a firm's business with its target audience during commercialization. However, the competition level (ICT firms’ population) in the city reduces the firm’s success. The study extends our understanding of entrepreneurial activity in the ICT sector, CLT, and potential policy guidelines.
